Details

Harry Louey Pang was a prosperous fruit merchant and prominent civic leader in Melbourne.

He was a leader in the Melbourne Chinese Empire Reform Association (1904 organisation) and believed that Australian prejudice would be weakened as the Chinese took up Western manners and customs. He was also a member of the Christian Chinese Union of Victoria c1903.

On 5 November 1918 he attended the Chinese interstate convention held in Melbourne. In April 1920, as a republican, he refused (with others) to be registered under the Beijing government which he considered to be illegitimate. In 1920 he was elected vice-president of the Victorian Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber became more nationalist in its policies during his office. He was later an office bearer in the Chinese Nationalist Party of Melbourne in 1923.
