[Woman near a small building made of wood, burlap and thatch, Darwin trip with Francis Birtles? horizontal] [picture] : [Darwin, Northern Territory] / [Frank Hurley]., c. 1910 - c. 1962, by Hurley, Frank (1885-1962), courtesy of National Library of Australia - Picture collection.

Title
Unidentified woman examining burlap on a dwelling in Chinatown
Date
c. 1911
Place
Australia - Northern Territory - Pine Creek?
Interpretive description

According to both index lists of photographs for the Kirkbride collection held at the State Library of Victoria this photograph was one of a group of twenty photographs taken taken at Pine Creek. Although other versions of this photograph describe it as Darwin, the Kirkbride collection is believed to be correct. The photographs match descriptions of Pine Creek's Chinese settlement as separate to the white areas and it also does not match known views of Darwin at this time. It appears to relate to a visit to Pine Creek Chinatown by two unidentified woman, a man and the photographer. See the Kirkbridge album at State Library of Victoria for similar photographs.
